We will ship you one L2 Chinese Praying Mantis.  They will grow to a 3 to 4" and become either brown or green in adulthood.  This variety is known for it's comfort with human keepers and will often become tame enough to hold.  You can easily bribe them with honey on a toothpick!

How should I keep them?

The Chinese Mantis is a very easy mantis to take care of, because it does not require a lot of special temperatures or humidity. The ideal temperature is about 77°F, but a temperature between 72 and 86°F is perfect too.

At night the temperature can be allow to drop, but it should be at least 65° F to ensure proper development. When exposed to temperatures below 45°F a Chinese mantis may not survive.

The Chinese Mantis does not need a lot of humidity. Keep the mantis in a well ventilated enclosure and spray with water two times a week. The mantis will drink from the water droplets when it is thirsty.

Do not keep them together, they will eat one another!

What should I feed them?

If you are keeping your praying mantis as pets, you will need to give them food as soon as they arrive.   Flightless fruit flies, available on our website, are an excellent choice to feed your young mantis.

When they grow older, they can eat all sorts of different foods and attack anything half it's body size or smaller.  Anything from worms to crickets, to even flies and Dubia!  Also, misting of the interior of their enclosure is needed every 1 to 2 days for adequate hydration.

For flies, you can buy our spikes and let them pupate into a bluebottle fly which they love!

L1 /L2 Melanogaster fruit flies
L3/L4 Hydei fruit flies
L4/L5 2 Week Crickets
L6 to adult Spikes turned into flies

 Can I hold them?

Yes!  This species is known for their comfort with human handlers.  In time, your mantis may come to trust you enough to allow you to hold it.  To speed up the trust-earning process, a toothpick with honey may be offered to the mantis to coax it into your hand.  Your mantis will associate you with being fed treats!

How big will they grow?

In time, with proper feeding and misting, your mantises will grow to 3.5-4 inches long and turn their adult color of either brown or green.
