We buy our bran from a mill used by bakeries, cereal companies, and for commercial baked goods. We pay more to have our grain not only finely ground but rolled so that each piece is easy for the small mealworm mouth to bite. We pay more for human quality grain, but we are so conscientious about avoiding pesticides and chemicals in our mealworms we don't mind.

PLEASE ALWAYS BAKE YOUR BRAN
No matter where you get your bran, you should either cook or freeze it to ensure any mites or moths are eliminated before use. You want chemical-free bran, so you will need to ensure any critters are destroyed before using it. Here's how:
If you're baking it, be sure it doesn't brown - or even turn tan. This will harden the edges where mealworms chew, causing their digestive tracts to become impacted. When you get your bran or oats, you can bake it in the oven at 175° F for about 20 minutes to kill any mites. Spread it out on a large cookie sheet and place foil over it to prevent browning or hardening. Let it cool completely before adding worms to it.
We use wheat bran to feed our mealworms that we purchase from a local grain mill. We pay a little more because we are so leery about pesticides or chemicals entering our insect population. We sell the same bran we use on this page. If you don't use ours, we recommend using organic grain if you can to avoid all pesticides. Next to our bran, the very best top-of-the-line thing you can feed them is Bob's Red Mill wheat bran which is available in most grocery stores. STORING YOUR BRAN
When stored properly, wheat bran can stay fresh for up to a year.
Store wheat bran in an airtight container, preferably a glass or food-grade plastic container with a tight-fitting lid. Sealable plastic bags, such as freezer bags, will also work. We love Mason jars!
Place the wheat bran in the refrigerator or freezer for best keeping. The cold prevents the bran from turning rancid and spoiling.
You can also keep the wheat bran in a tightly sealed container in a dark, cool corner of the pantry or cupboard. This will work if refrigerator or freezer space is not available.
To tell if it's still good your nose is your best guide. If your bran smells like burnt rubber or pencil erasers, it’s over the hill and should be put out on the ground to kill weeds in the garden or into the compost heap.
